Reggie Fils-Aime to Retire in April.

Ass Kicked, Names Taken, Memories Made.

Today Reggie Fils-Aime, the President of Nintendo of America announced his retirement from the company. In a video on twitter, Reggie talks to the fans and states that in April he will be “Handing over the controller” to ascending president Doug Bowser. As it won’t be an immediate departure Nintendo should hardly miss a step. Preparations have been in place for a while surely and Reggie must feel comfortable enough to hand the reins over.

Reggie has become iconic in his role as Nintendo of America president in the 15 years since he took over the job. Coming on to the scene with his now infamous opening line of ” My name is Reggie. I’m about kickin’ ass, I’m about takin’ names, and we’re about makin’ games.” at the 2004 E3 Nintendo conference. Or becoming one of the most popular memes and embracing the fan culture that became unavoidable. The Regginator took on all the jokes that came with the duty of representing Nintendo games. Nintendo is about fun, and nobody embodied that better than Reggie. His body was ready for whatever the internet threw at him and it onlt endeared himself to the Nintendo fanbase world wide.

For Nintendo they will miss his presence but during this time, Reggie is key to preparing the new President Doug Bowser in all of the duties to come with it. While this is a pipe dream, it would be nice to see Reggie announce one more game. Perhaps if there is a Nintendo Direct before he steps down there could be a special presentation from him. Possibly announcing new Animal Crossing gameplay or a brand new title. For fans of Reggie there could almost be no better way to send him off, with his own ” One more thing.” And, as a lifelong fan let me just say, thank you Reggie, for all the years of service and passion you have for this medium. Nintendo and gaming in general wouldn’t be where it is today if not for his influence. And for that we will always be grateful.
