After nearly a 5 year hiatus and a brief E3 2018 tease, Halo Infinite looks set to make an appearance on the Xbox stage at E3 this year. On the latest episode of IGN Unfiltered, host Ryan McCaffrey sat down with Bonnie Ross, the head of 343 Industries (whom was recently inducted into the AIAS hall of fame). The two discussed a wide range of topics spanning Ross’s career in the games industry and the Halo franchise in particular.
During the interview, Ross detailed what it was like making the Master Chief Collection and the struggles that came with it, as well as her studio’s work on Halo 4 and Halo 5. Highlighting those previous games, Ross acknowledged that Halo Infinite needs to have a great story and great multiplayer to compliment it. She touched on how she loved Halo 4’s story, but felt Halo 5’s story was too overwhelming for gamers, while stressing the importance of getting the story right for Halo Infinite.
When McCaffrey asked her about the creative capabilities that the new Slipspace game engine would allow for Halo Infinite, Ross teased that she didn’t want to get delve into that too much, saying “Chris Lee will talk about this at E3. So Chris Lee is the head of the Infinite team, and I kinda would save that for E3.” This definitely seems to indicate that Microsoft is at the very least going to delve into the technology behind making Infinite and show how 343 will be able to evolve the Halo franchise and set it up for the next 10 to 20 years.
Interestingly enough, the topic of battle royale games was brought up by Ryan McCaffrey as he asked if Halo could see a battle royale mode in its future, to which Ross didn’t specifically say no. Instead, Ross replied saying:
“Whatever we do needs to be the right thing for Halo. Whether or not you call it a battle royale or how we’re thinking about things going forward, the team thinks about, ‘This needs to be right for Halo,'” She said. “It’s always an active conversation, but I’m not saying anything more about [battle royale] right now.”
This seems to be almost a walk-back from a comments made by 343 employees Jeff Easterling and James Bachici when they were asked during a 343 social stream on Mixer if a battle royale mode would be coming to Halo, to which they replied “the only BR we’re really interested in is the Battle Rifle.” The walk-back of earlier comments made by 343 may be a result of the stunning success of Respawn Entertainment’s Apex Legends the latest game of the battle royale genre that has more FPS elements to it than the battle royale titan that is Fortnite. In her interview with McCaffrey, Bonnie Ross praised Apex Legends for it’s success and even stated that it plays more like Halo than Fortnite. This could even be interpreted as a possible hint to some form of battle royale coming to Halo Infinite.
