Which Major Sony Game is Going to Release This Year?

Sony’s Holy Trinity.

After dominating the competition for years now during a relatively uncontested generation, Sony seemingly has almost nothing left up its sleeve. After the last few years of their continued success, Sony has three games that are heavily anticipated with no firm release window yet. All three major titles either look or sound further along than Sony would suggest. The Last of Us: Part II, Ghosts of Tsushima, and Death Stranding all reasonably could come out this year, some are more likely than others, and realistically there will only be one game released this year because PlayStation has pumped the brakes so much when it comes to updates on games. The question now becomes which of these games is most likely to come out this year?

The Last of Us: Part II

Originally announced in 2016 the long anticipated sequel is rumored to finally be releasing this year. From Inverse, the release month may have been leaked through some promotional material. A poster for Spanish audiences features the phrase “LANZAMIENTO: OCTUBRE 2019” which is Spanish for “Launching: October 2019” there are some causes for concern with this leak however, a lack of real box art, and some other causes for concern with this leak, which are all explained very well by Corey Plante. It is a leak to take with a grain of salt, as all leaks should be, but it is a well made fake if it is one. This game has been in development for over 3 years now considering they had plenty of work done before even showing the first trailer off to the public. We’ve seen the now instantly recognizable E3 trailer from last year which we were led to assume featured actual gameplay and combat. It would not surprise me at all if this game ended up releasing this year, maybe even in October, it feels like the right time for this game, so we may end up seeing it.

Ghosts of Tsushima

This one is admittedly the longest shot to actually come out this year. Having only been announced last year at E3 Ghosts looks decently far along in development, with a fully built world with things going on in the background, it looked amazing. We even got to see 8 minutes of gameplay at E3 last year, which may be more meaningful gameplay footage with more weight behind it than the next game. For a premier of a game that is a lot of material to drop in one conference. There isn’t nearly as much talk about this game as there is the other two. While it is surprising to see how far along this game is, more than likely it will still need another year to finish development.

Death Stranding

If I were a betting man, this would be my choice. It is a bit riskier of a pick than The Last of Us, but there has been a lot of talk about this game early in the year. The game is being shown off to select groups or people behind the scenes who are absolutely raving about the game, and Hideo Kojima teased the game in a Famitsu article from December 2018, asking if 2019 was “The year of the Whale.” Death Stranding is similar to The Last of Us: Part II in that it has been in development for a while and we have to see what the game actually is at some point in the future, right? Ever since its announcement this game has been shrouded in mystery as the public still has no clue what any of this game is really about, gameplay or story wise. Surely once the proverbial floodgates open and we can actually find out what this game actually is, the release date won’t be far after. Personally this is the game I’m most curious about, hopefully 2019 does turn out to be the year of the whale and we finally can crack the nut that is Death Stranding.

The worst case scenario is that none of these games come out this year and Sony stays radio quiet until 2020, letting Xbox have the spotlight all to themselves. In the best case scenario, both The Last of Us: Part II and Death Stranding release this year. However, since Sony is skipping E3 this year, the chances of that happening are almost none. More than likely we will see one of the two more likely candidates in the later part of the year, and then possibly in the Spring of 2020 we see the other games that Sony has planned for its next generation.
