Disc-less Xbox One S rumored to be coming this Spring

Per a report from Jez Corden at Windows Central, a disc-less Xbox One S is rumored to be on the way with the intention of being launched this Spring. Corden, a reporter with an established credibility as a reliable leaker of information for Microsoft-related things, states that his sources have the new Xbox launching sometime in early May with preorders going up in mid- April.

According to the article, the new console is going by the code name of “Xbox Maverick,” though the actual name for the console is reportedly going to be the “Xbox One S All-Digital Edition.” The price point of the new console is unknown at this time, but it will likely be around $200 or less due to the lack of a disc drive. Aside from having no disc drive, no other specs are known the new console, but it likely will carry the same specs of the standard Xbox One S.

This move by Microsoft is an interesting one, as it’s coming towards the end of the Xbox One generation with the next generation of Xbox consoles rumored to be launching as early as Holiday 2020. With game purchases becoming more and more digital, and with the rising popularity of Xbox Game Pass, the new console is likely Microsoft’s attempt at testing the waters to see if gamers would be willing to ditch disc drives and fully commit to digital downloads and purchases.

It will also be interesting to see how many people purchase the new console and whether or not it will translate into any of the next-gen hardware plans for Xbox.

As it goes with any rumor, gamers should take this with a pinch of salt until Microsoft officially confirms the new console, but if the rumor is indeed true (which is “looking pretty solid right now,” per Jez Corden,) then an announcement from Microsoft shouldn’t be too far away.
